Have you always wanted to get smoother, more glowing skin? Do you find yourself hoping hard that your over-the-counter skin products would finally work? Are you tired of waiting, and do you want to see long-lasting results? Dermabrasion is the answer.

You can avail of dermabrasion for wrinkles, acne scars, age spots, sun damage, and other similar problems. The trend of acne treatment in Melbourne has also been moving towards minimally invasive treatments such as dermabrasion, and we at Roycroft Medical Centre with Dr. Usha are happy to give you that experience. Read on to learn more about dermabrasion.

What is dermabrasion?

Dermabrasion is a skin resurfacing procedure. It mainly involves exfoliation, commonly used as a facial treatment. During the treatment, your skin specialist will use a rapidly rotating instrument to remove the surface layer of your skin. After the treatment, the skin that grows back and replaces the newly removed layer will come out smoother, plumper, and ultimately more glowing.

For those who want to appear younger or fresher, dermabrasion is a gift from the skincare gods. It is minimally invasive, and while it may require some downtime, the results are incredibly worth it. It would appear as though you hit a reset button for your skin, no matter what age you are.

What to expect during the treatment

You will receive anaesthesia before the treatment. Dermabrasion is minimally invasive, not non-invasive. So, while it’s not a surgical procedure, it can cause some pain. Local anaesthesia will protect you from that. It could make you feel drowsy, so it’s best to arrange for a ride home after the procedure.

During the procedure, the doctor will apply a specific cream or gel, and then run the rapidly rotating device along your skin. This is called a dermabrader. After that, Dr. Usha will cover the area with dressing to relieve the skin.

What to do after the treatment

You can expect the doctor to leave you with instructions on how to perform personal aftercare for your skin. This advice includes everything from precautionary measures to supplementary products like creams. This downtime takes about two weeks, after which you can return to work, attend gatherings, or hit the gym, all with the freshest face your friends have ever seen!

What can dermabrasion treat?

Dermabrasion can treat the following common skin problems:

  • Precancerous skin patches

  • Redness or thick skin on the nose

  • Surgery or injury scars

  • Sun damage

  • Uneven skin tone or skin discolouration

  • In special cases, tattoo removal

Of course, each patient is unique. Come in for a consultation so you and Dr Usha can talk about your medical history, your experience with your skin, and other relevant information you may want to discuss with your doctor. Your treatment will be unique, and it will be designed according to where your skin is at in terms of skin health.

How to prepare for your dermabrasion treatment

Again, as mentioned above, you will undergo an initial consultation days or even weeks before the actual treatment. This step is important; neither you nor your doctor wants to make your skin problems worse or create problems where there previously wasn’t any. A review of your medical history will protect you from that.

You will also be asked not to smoke for a few weeks or expose yourself to the sun before and after getting the treatment.

Depending on your situation, you may be advised to take antiviral medication, antibiotics, retinoid cream, or similar.
